In July of 2020, St. Joseph Catholic School, St. John the Baptist Catholic School, and St. Irenaeus Preschool came together, adopting a new identity: Holy Family Catholic School. Their union marked the emergence of a best-kept secret in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh! Read on to learn more about who we are today and the legacy behind Holy Family.
Serving children from age 3 through grade 8, our early childhood, elementary, and middle school programs stress the values of Leadership, Achievement, and Faithfulness. For nearly 65 years, Holy Family Catholic School (HFCS)'s main campus in Plum, PA, has proudly provided an academically advanced, faith-based education for children in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh, including Oakmont, Plum, Verona, Penn Hills, Murrysville, Monroeville, Cheswick, New Kensington, and many surrounding communities.
A premier Pittsburgh East Regional Catholic Elementary School (PERCES), HFCS offers preschool at both of our safe and secure Oakmont and Plum Campuses, as well as all-day kindergarten, elementary, and middle school at our Plum Campus. We focus on providing the best education for the best value possible, keeping our tuition among the most affordable in the area while continually providing the best learning approaches, materials, and faculty for our students.
At Holy Family, we recognize the unique individuality of every single child, and we are committed to nurturing every student to help them achieve their personal best. With all teachers highly-qualified in their disciplines, a low student-to-faculty ratio, a top-notch curriculum that integrates Christ-centered values, a strong school community that embraces our school families, and an array of athletic offerings and extracurricular activities, our students are empowered to excel during and after their time with us.
Despite decreasing enrollment among Catholic schools nationwide, Holy Family Catholic School is proud to serve approximately 300 students annually and enjoys growth due to the support of our community and reputation among the myriad families we have served. Since opening our doors, Holy Family has maintained a strong tradition of academic excellence. Our students routinely lead area academic competitions, including those for National History Day and the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS). Moreover, on average, many of our students score two to four years beyond their grade level on standardized tests by the end of their middle school years. A number of our alumni have departed our middle school and gone on to become area valedictorian and salutatorians.
Reflective of findings about Catholic schools and their impact on graduation rates and achievement gaps for poor and minority students, Holy Family is proud that its students are numbered among the 99% graduation rate, which far surpasses the graduation rate of many public schools and other private schools, and 97% of these graduates go on to some form of post-secondary education. Our alumni have successfully completed degrees at any number of prestigious schools.
In 1871, St. Joseph Parish School in Verona, Pennsylvania, named for Jesus' earthly father and the spouse of the Blessed Mother, first opened its doors with a staff of lay people. In 1882, the Sister of Notre Dame came and helped the school to operate on a regular basis. Over the years, laity and lay people led St. Joseph's, serving countless children and families and building a rich legacy of faith-based community education.
On September 2, 1959, St. John the Baptist School, named for the saint renowned for preparing the world for the coming of Christ, opened its doors in nearby Plum Borough. Initially, St. John's had eleven large classrooms and a large multipurpose room. A school addition was completed in 1963 and dedicated in January of 1964. During the 1984-1985 school year, morning and afternoon kindergarten programs were added, making us one of the few schools in the region with these offerings. St. Irenaeus Preschool in Oakmont was incorporated with St. John the Baptist.
As part of "On Mission For The Church Alive!" parishes throughout the diocese were working through various stages of merging. The parishes of Oakmont, Plum, and Verona, which included St. Joseph Church, St. Irenaeus Church, St. John the Baptist Church, St. Januarius Church, and Our Lady of Joy Church had come together under the name, Holy Family Parish. On July 1, 2020, St. Joseph Catholic School, St. John the Baptist Catholic School, and St. Irenaeus Preschool joined, taking the same name, Holy Family Catholic School.
